Bruno Fernandes has received his third red card of the season after being shown a second yellow just 90 seconds into the second half of Manchester United’s match against Wolves.
The Red Devils arrived at Molineux following a humiliating 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth last week, leaving them in 13th after a mixed start under Ruben Amorim’s management.
Wolves dominated the first half, testing Andre Onana with a header from Jorge Strand Larsen, while Matheus Cunha emerged as the key player once again with his powerful runs.
United faced pressure to improve in the second half and bring some festive joy to their traveling fans, but captain Fernandes delivered a moment of madness that spoiled their chances.
The Portuguese midfielder dived into a 50-50 challenge and caught Nelson Semedo, leading to his dismissal.
Fernandes had no grounds for complaint, as slow-motion replays revealed that he was late on the Wolves right-back and made contact with his ankle.
Matheus Cunha then scored directly from a corner, marking his 10th Premier League goal this season.
Wolves capitalized on their numerical advantage when Cunha netted from a corner, bringing his total to 10 Premier League goals this season.
This marked the third time this season that the Portuguese midfielder faced an early exit, although his red card against Tottenham in another 3-0 defeat was eventually overturned.
Shortly after the September match, a review panel determined that VAR should have advised referee Chris Kavanagh to reverse Fernandes’s red card against Spurs.
The midfielder was dismissed just before halftime at Old Trafford after scraping his boot against James Maddison’s leg during a challenge.
Both teams quickly surrounded the referee, but despite Fernandes’s protests, Kavanagh was advised to maintain his initial decision, forcing the Portuguese player to walk off the field.
United were already a goal down, thanks to Brennan Johnson’s fourth goal in four matches, when Fernandes was sent off, and they conceded two more in the second half, with goals from Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke increasing the deficit.
After the pivotal incident of the match, Fernandes was seen conversing with Maddison on the pitch. Post-match, the United midfielder explained what they discussed.
He stated: “I just wanted to come and speak and be myself because my teammates deserve that for what they accomplished in the game despite playing with one man down—especially since I was the one sent off, the one who let them down.”
Fernandes received a red card against Tottenham in September, which was later rescinded.
The Portuguese midfielder was shown a red just before halftime in United’s crushing 3-0 home loss after scraping his boot against James Maddison’s leg.
He followed up his dismissal against Tottenham with another red against Porto just days later.
