Mason Mount, the Manchester United midfielder, was forced off the pitch within the first 15 minutes of the Sunday derby against Manchester City.
Mount has faced persistent injury challenges during his time at United but had been in good form recently, earning a starting spot ahead of Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho at the Etihad Stadium.
Gary Neville, the former United captain, described Mount’s injury as ‘demoralising’ during his commentary on Sky Sports, suggesting that Mount might feel like he’s ‘letting everyone down’.
Neville commented, ‘Losing a player so early in the match isn’t good, especially for Mason Mount, who appears resigned, having spent a lot of time rehabilitating in the gym. It’s demoralising, feeling like you’re disappointing everyone.’
Leon Osman, former England and Everton midfielder, added on BBC Radio 5 Live, ‘The expression on Mason Mount’s face says it all. He’s devastated. This is exactly what he didn’t need. Given the chance by Ruben Amorim, he would have wanted a consistent run of games. It’s frustrating for him.’
Mount’s injury didn’t seem to result from a challenge but rather occurred off the ball, causing him to collapse on the field.
Visibly emotional, Mount left the pitch slowly, appearing on the verge of tears. Ruben Amorim, the United manager, embraced Mount as he made way for substitute Kobbie Mainoo.
Despite Rashford and Garnacho being potential replacements, they were not part of Amorin’s squad for the match.
Before the game, Amorim justified his selection choices, stating, ‘We evaluate various factors: training, performance, team spirit, and motivation. Everything is considered when we select players. That’s my decision-making process.’
Mount, who joined United from Chelsea in a deal worth up to £60 million in July 2023, has started only nine Premier League games for the Red Devils since then. His contract with United runs until June 2028.
