ZERO TO HERO: Amorim gets first Premier League win when Rashford and Zirkzee scored twice each to thrash Toffees

RUBEN AMORIM stated that Marcus Rashford needed to ‘want it’ to return to his peak form.

He certainly wanted it on Sunday afternoon, and he got it with two goals and a performance that suggested the new manager is rapidly discovering the old Rashford.

Joshua Zirkzee scored his first goals since the first game of the season. Marcus Rashford also bagged a double.Manchester United have scored seven goals this week.

Amorim even got two goals from Joshua Zirkzee, and we were wondering whether he’d ever get another chance.

Even though it was only Everton, the Red Devils performed admirably.

It’s not often that the fans at Old Trafford get to enjoy a comfortable league win.

Amorim had two victories and one draw in its first three games.

United fans’ spirits have been lifted by the new manager’s enthusiasm.

And now Rashford has scored two goals in a game for the first time in 22 months, doing so in a 3-0 home win over Leicester City.

He was in a purple patch at the time, on his way to scoring a career-high 30 goals in a single season.

Man Utd’s performance against the Toffees was clinical.

After scoring in the 1-1 draw at Ipswich last week, the 27-year-old’s performance was incredibly encouraging.

The weight of the world on his shoulders appeared to be lifted as he glided across the Old Trafford turf with his trademark easy grace and pace.

Jarrad Branthwaite was keen to help United this season, and it appears he got his desire.

The Everton centre-back pushed a ball past his own goalie before providing a partial assist for the home team’s second goal as the struggling Toffees crumbled.

Of course, Branthwaite had hoped to don the Red of United in this match after the big spenders came knocking on Goodison Park’s door last summer.

They offered £45 million plus add-ons; Everton demanded £70 million, and United looked elsewhere.

He had an afternoon to waste here.

In the 34th minute, Bruno Fernandes sent a corner to the unmarked Rashford on the outskirts of the area.

Jordan Pickford, diving, appeared to cover his shot to the bottom left corner.

Then Branthwaite extended his foot and redirected it past him.

Only seven minutes later, Branthwaite was on the verge of being hoisted shoulder high off the pitch by United fans.

Everton appeared to be in no danger as Pickford advanced from his position with the ball and played it forward to Abdoulaye Doucoure.

Still no danger as Doucoure returned it to Branthwaite, but as he dithered, Amad snatched possession and fed Brunos Fernandes.

Bruno Fernandes provided two assists.

Even United didn’t waste this opportunity, as the captain squared for Zirkzee, who scored only his second goal for the club.

Reward for United for being more upbeat from the start against Everton, who arrived in difficulties at the bottom of the table but had only one defeat in their previous eight league games.

Five of those were draws, and they had not scored in the previous three, so any hope that moving Dominic Calvert-Lewin to the bench and Beto up front would change that was misguided.

Although Beto had Everton’s sole chance of the first period after being put through by Dwight McNeil, he rounded the goalie but shot into the side netting.

That occurred as the scores leveled, but United always appeared to be the team most likely to break the tie.

The most threatening players on the pitch were Amad and Rashford, who combined to extend United’s two-goal advantage straight from the second-half kickoff, putting the game out of Everton’s reach.

Not that Sean Dyche’s side appeared to be within striking distance from the start.

When John Brooks blew the whistle to start the second term, Everton passed the ball back for Pickford to launch upfield.

United cleared their lines, and Zirkzee dispatched Amad with a beautiful spin and lay off.

Rashford sped past two Everton defenders and across his teammate to receive a superbly weighted pass and score.

Number four arrived in the 64th minute, with Amad’s incredible determination once again paying off.

He surged through James Tarkowski to win the ball, then found Zirkzee, who blasted across Pickford into the bottom right corner.

This was United’s first four-goal league victory since defeating Leeds 5-1 on the first day of the 2021-22 season.

The journey to Arsenal on Wednesday will, of course, be a more difficult test for Amorim in his early days as manager.

He has at least gotten United back on track, with Rashford once again leading the way.
