RUUD STRIKE: Ruud van Nistelrooy was mercilessly axed by Ruben Amorim in his first decision as Manchester United boss

Ruben Amorim took over as Manchester United’s new head coach on Monday, dismissing interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Amorim arrived from Portugal about 2 p.m. with his coaching staff and was transported directly to United’s training facility at Carrington, where he was hailed by key executives.

A short time later, the club announced that former United striker Van Nistelrooy, who had returned to Old Trafford in the summer as Erik ten Hag’s assistant, was leaving. The Dutchman was eager to stay after an unblemished four-game stint as caretaker since Ten Hag’s dismissal.

Amorim and his five staff – assistants Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido, and Emanuel Ferro, goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital, and sports scientist Paulo Barreira – boarded the three-hour flight from Beja to Manchester around 11 a.m. after taking charge of his final game as Sporting Lisbon manager against Braga on Sunday.

The Portuguese delegation departed the airport in a chauffeur-driven Mercedes people carrier and arrived at Carrington, where United CEO Omar Berrada, sports director Dan Ashworth, and technical director Jason Wilcox awaited them.

Amorim, dressed casually in pants and a hooded top, laughed with Berrada about the English weather before warmly embracing all three men.

The 39-year-old was given a guided tour of the first-team facilities, which have been relocated to the women’s and academy buildings this season while the training site is being renovated for £50 million, and was shown on a club video being introduced to personnel in the offices and canteen.

Amorim can’t start his new £6.5 million-a-year position until he gets a work permit, which is anticipated to be processed within the next few days.

The majority of the players are on international duty and won’t return until the middle of next week to prepare for his first game away to Ipswich on November 24.
