Uganda’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa, and his son Timothy Tayebwa met with Manchester United goalkeeper Andrey Onana on Sunday morning. Onana is in Uganda because Cameroon will play their neighbor Kenya in an AFCON qualifier on Monday.
Tayebwa and Onana met at the Sheraton Hotel in Kampala, where the West African national team is staying ahead of Cameroon’s crucial Group J match.
During the discussion, Tayebwa discussed how passionate Ugandans are about Manchester United and encouraged Onana to advocate for the famed football club to visit Uganda.
“This morning, my son and I had a fun conversation with @AndreyOnana.” On Sunday morning, Hon Tayebwa stated, “The @ManUtd goalkeeper is in Uganda for their @DiskiAfrika qualifier match against @Harambee__Stars of Kenya.”
“As die-hard @ManUtd fans, we’re thrilled to see an African flying the African flag at the world’s biggest football club.” And I’m pleased with how he has settled in. We’re all hoping for him to succeed, he remarked.
“On a lighter note, I told him I would look into it to see if he has family in Uganda, since the Bakiga came from Cameroon.” My son’s urge to see him play live at Old Trafford excites both of us.
They arrived in Uganda on Saturday and are preparing to play the Harambee Stars at Mandela Stadium on Monday. Cameroon is referred to as the “Indomitable Lions.”
This is their second visit to Uganda in the last several months. The first was for a game against Zimbabwe last month, which attracted thousands of spectators.
However, the Kenya Football Federation said that future AFCON qualifiers would be held behind closed doors. This means that spectators will be unable to see Onana and the Indomitable Lions perform live at Namboole.
Many Ugandan Manchester United fans who cheered for Cameroon in their previous game would have to do it from outside the stadium, which is unfortunate for die-hard fans who want to support their idol.
