Trent Alexander-Arnold has reportedly made a surprising move to buy a Ligue 1 football club, Nantes. The Liverpool defender, who already holds a stake in the French car manufacturer and Formula One team Alpine, is looking to expand his investment portfolio.
The 25-year-old, who acquired a 24% share in Alpine for £164 million last June, has submitted a bid of approximately £84 million (€100 million) for Nantes. This offer includes £67 million as an upfront payment, with an additional £17 million in seller credit and potential bonuses totaling up to £34 million.
Alexander-Arnold’s father, Michael, manages his financial interests through a London-based investment fund, and they have reportedly been in discussions with Nantes owner Waldemar Kita for over a year. Their communication began with a video call last summer, followed by an in-person meeting in Geneva earlier this year. Most recently, the two parties met in London to further explore the takeover.
Kita, who has owned Nantes since 2007, has expressed frustration with the club’s financial difficulties but has denied any interest in selling. Previously, he had discussions with English businessman Leigh Hunt in 2019 about a potential sale, which fell through after it was leaked to the press.
As for Alexander-Arnold, he currently earns £180,000 a week at Liverpool, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.
