Kylian Mbappe was reportedly on the brink of transferring to Liverpool two years ago, but the deal fell apart after Paris Saint-Germain set a staggering £338 million price tag.
At 25, Mbappe recently made headlines by leaving PSG for Real Madrid on a free transfer, concluding a seven-year stint with the French club. His exit was marred by conflict, especially after he was initially excluded from Luis Enrique’s squad at the start of the season.
Mbappe had nearly joined Real Madrid for free in 2022 before opting for a short-term contract extension with PSG. The French giants were displeased with missing out on a transfer fee for Mbappe, who had been signed for £150 million from Monaco in 2017.
Reports from L’Equipe suggest that PSG nearly sold Mbappe to Liverpool shortly after he renewed his contract. The striker was reportedly frustrated with PSG’s transfer activity, having been led to believe that players like Robert Lewandowski and Bernardo Silva would join the club. As the transfer deadline approached, Mbappe sought an exit.
Both Liverpool and Real Madrid submitted offers, with Mbappe allegedly agreeing to personal terms with Liverpool that would later facilitate a move to Real Madrid. Liverpool was even prepared to pay £169 million to complete the transfer. However, PSG obstructed the deal by demanding a record-breaking £338 million.
Liverpool withdrew their bid, and Real Madrid did not proceed with an official offer. Ultimately, Mbappe stayed at PSG until his contract expired and joined Real Madrid on a free transfer.
