100% long balls, 100% aerial duels: Man Utd United star Lisandro Martine dazzles in unfamiliar position despite national team’s loss

Despite Argentina’s 2-1 loss to Colombia on Tuesday night, Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez gave a good account of himself.

Colombia defeated Argentina 2-1 at the Roberto Melendez Metropolitan Stadium, with goals from Yerson Mosquera and James Rodriguez.

The home team seized the lead in the 25th minute when Rodriguez floated a cross to the far post, which Mosquera expertly connected with to score.

Argentina, who lacked offensive in the absence of captain Lionel Messi, answered quickly after the break, with Nico Gonzalez dancing past Colombia’s defence to guide the ball into the back of the net via the goalkeeper’s knees.Image

At the hour mark, Rodriguez converted a penalty kick after Colombia was handed a penalty.

Martinez was placed in a very unusual left-back position by Lionel Scaloni in another encounter, and despite his team’s defeat, the United No.6 did not disappoint.

Martinez made one tackle while on the pitch, a last-man challenge that prevented Colombia from breaching Emi Martinez’s goal.

The World Cup winner competed in four ground duels, winning three of them. He was obliged to compete in one aerial challenge, and he won.Image

The 26-year-old had 30 touches on the ball and connected with his teammates on 18 of 19 passes, for an individual pass accuracy of 95%.

He struck two long balls and connected both times. Martinez also attempted two dribbles and accomplished both of them.

The United defender was sturdy at left-back, and his side of the field was undeniably safer than the opposing flank. He had a great chance to score at the end of the first 45 minutes, but he passed it up.

Martinez’s focus now switches to United and their upcoming Premier League match against Southampton.
