Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that he still harbors deep affection for Manchester United, nearly two years after his departure from the club.
Ronaldo ended his second stint at United in 2022 under contentious circumstances, leaving the Theatre of Dreams for Saudi Arabia. The legendary forward, now 39, initially made his mark at Manchester United when he joined from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 as a teenager. Over two separate periods with the Red Devils, he made nearly 346 appearances and developed a strong bond with the club.
Despite his current role with Saudi Pro League team Al-Nassr, Ronaldo expressed enduring love for his former club. In an interview with former United teammate Rio Ferdinand, Ronaldo stated, “We cannot control things at some point in our lives, but what’s done is done. I still love Manchester United and I wish them the best!”
His heartfelt comments have elicited a mixed reaction from fans. Many remain unsettled by the dramatic way his second tenure at United ended. Ronaldo’s contract was terminated following a high-profile interview with Piers Morgan, where he criticized the club’s standards, the management of Erik ten Hag, and the ownership of the Glazers. This explosive exit has left some supporters wary of his nostalgic sentiments.
One fan responded with, “The audacity to say this after encouraging negativity towards Man United,” while another criticized, “This doesn’t sound like an apology, Cristiano. Do better.” A third added, “You love United so much, yet you spent most of your career in Madrid and left under a cloud when Saudi money came calling. I respect your contributions on the pitch, but come on!”
Conversely, some fans were touched by Ronaldo’s expression of love for United. One commented, “I’m crying, happy tears,” while another wrote, “We still love you too.” A third expressed, “I know I criticized you in the heat of the moment, but I love you, king. The greatest there is, was, and will ever be.”
During his chat with Ferdinand, Ronaldo and his former teammate reminisced about their time together at United from 2003 to 2009, playing a game of “pick the better player” and reflecting on past teammates. Despite approaching his 40th birthday, Ronaldo continues to excel in Saudi Arabia, where he has scored 62 goals and provided 17 assists in 68 appearances since his move.
