Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool remains uncertain, but few clubs can match the advantages he currently enjoys at Anfield. Despite the speculation surrounding his departure, Liverpool should be particularly wary of one club in the ongoing discussions.
As with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Salah’s future will be a topic of discussion until he either confirms his departure or signs a new contract. Salah is in the final year of the three-year deal he signed in 2022, and his stellar performance at the start of this season has only intensified the fans’ desire for him to extend his stay. His influential role in Liverpool’s recent victory at Old Trafford, where he contributed to all three goals, was followed by comments suggesting this season might be his last at the club.
“I had a good summer, I had a long time to work on myself and think positively because, as you know, this is my last year at the club,” Salah stated. It has since become clear that he was referring to the final year of his current contract, reigniting speculation about his future.
Although Salah holds significant leverage in any negotiations with Liverpool, it is important to recognize that few clubs can offer him what he currently enjoys on Merseyside. While Saudi Pro League teams might offer substantial financial incentives, they cannot match the competitive level of the Premier League. A move within England seems unlikely due to Salah’s deep connection with Liverpool, leaving only a few European giants with the financial means to attract him.
Barcelona is in disarray and cannot offer Salah much beyond perhaps a change of climate. Paris Saint-Germain’s period of signing high-profile players seems to have ended, and Bayern Munich has recently invested heavily in Michael Olise from Crystal Palace. Italy, once a prominent destination, no longer holds the same appeal, making Real Madrid the most viable alternative.
Madrid boasts two of the world’s top wingers, Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, both of whom excel on the left flank. On the right, their options are less robust, although Rodrygo is a promising young talent. Should Real Madrid seek a more experienced right-winger, Salah could become an attractive free transfer option.
If such an opportunity does not arise, Salah may find his choices limited. Sometimes, staying where one is valued and thriving may be the best option, and Salah might be best served continuing his successful tenure at Liverpool.
