The goalkeeper position at Manchester United currently belongs to André Onana. However, there are clear concerns about some aspects of his play.
Paul Scholes had anticipated this. The Man Utd legend admitted before the season that Onana made him extremely nervous. He noted that there was little confidence in Onana’s handling of aerial balls or his ability to save shots.
While Onana is generally solid, some instances, such as the goals conceded against Liverpool, have led many to expect more from the goalkeeper. This suggests that a replacement for Onana might soon be considered. If that’s the case, Ineos could have a great option in mind. For two consecutive summers, Manchester United has considered Zion Suzuki but to no avail. However, next summer, a deal might be too enticing for the Red Devils to pass up.
Suzuki was targeted in the summer of 2023 as a promising young goalkeeper playing in Japan. Now, Suzuki, deemed ‘one of the best talents in the world,’ has begun to prove himself in a top European league.
After turning down Manchester United last summer to join St Truiden in Belgium, the Japanese player’s decision is now seen as a wise move.
Suzuki was the top goalkeeper in Belgium last season during his debut campaign, demonstrating his ability in European football. Months later, after moving to Parma in Serie A, Suzuki continues to impress in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
So far, Suzuki has played in 3 matches—though his third appearance was marred by a red card after a clash with Napoli’s David Neres. Nevertheless, in the games he participated in, Suzuki made 15 saves out of 17 shots faced, giving him a save percentage of 88.2%, according to FBref. This is an exceptionally impressive statistic.
With only 2 goals conceded, Suzuki has performed admirably considering the number of shots he has faced. His ball distribution is also quite good, with a high pass accuracy rate. Specifically, Suzuki’s short passes have a 100% success rate (16/16), medium-range passes 100% (47/47), and long passes 48.3% (28/58).
Suzuki is considered one of the most promising young goalkeepers in world football, and if his Serie A season continues positively, Manchester United should seriously consider making a move for him in the summer of 2025.
In fact, Suzuki does want to move to Old Trafford but believes the timing isn’t right yet. He prefers to gain experience with smaller clubs first.
Suzuki shared: “Indeed, there was an offer from Manchester United. As a football player, of course, I would like to join Man United, but I really want to take time to think about the future.
Man United already has Onana. The important thing is to participate in matches. I want to make the most of what I’ve learned and give my best.”
Onana may not be the biggest issue at Man United, but replacing him next summer could be the next step in building a team capable of challenging for titles.
This season, after 3 matches, Onana has faced 9 on-target shots and has saved only 4, which translates to a save percentage of 44.4%, relatively low in the Premier League.
Therefore, Manchester United and Ineos might keep an eye on Suzuki next summer, potentially to replace and create competition for Onana.
