Rodri joins 10 Premier League talents on the Ballon d’Or shortlist, including Man City teammates and Arsenal representatives, but there is no Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi for the first time in 21 years

The candidates for the 2024 Ballon d’Or have been announced, with Manchester City midfielder Rodri heading the Premier League’s bid to win the prized individual award.

Rodri’s outstanding achievements for both club and country last season helped him win his fourth Premier League title, reach the FA Cup final, and win the European Championship with Spain.

Ten Premier League players have been named among the 30 nominees for the annual ceremony commemorating the finest male and female players in the world, which will take place on October 28 at the opulent Theatre du Chatelet in the heart of Paris.

On Wednesday, a shortlist of 30 players was released, which will be reduced to only a few individuals vying for the title of world’s best footballer.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi dominated the award in the 2010s, but have not been included for the first time in 21 years.

However, Messi is not likely to compete for the men’s trophy this year, with Rodri joining Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior and England’s Jude Bellingham on the final shortlist.

The Real Madrid duo shone throughout the Spanish club’s season, helping them win the LaLiga title and defeating Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final.

32-year-old Madrid fullback Dani Carvajal has also been nominated for the Ballon d’Or, having finished the season with various club accolades and the Euro 2024 triumph with Spain.

Other Premier League representatives include players from Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea, but none from Manchester United.
