These are adjectives used in describing the very best of defenders in the game. One would expect such a player to play a crucial role to any top team’s success. The Portugal international has not failed in that regard.

In his debut season with City, he contributed significantly to the club’s Premier League and Carabao Cup victories. The Blues also made it to the Champions League final for the first time ever. His exceptional contributions to the squad were recognised with multiple accolades.

 

These include being awarded Manchester City Player of the Year, FWA Footballer of the Year, Premier League Player of the Season, and UEFA Champions League Defender of the Season in 2020/21.

 

Despite a promising start to the season, with Erling Haaland shattering goalscoring records, the club has subsequently struggled to win games. This has allowed Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal to take a five-point lead at the top of the table. One of the decisions that could be affecting City’s performance is the benching of Ruben Dias.

A player who has won so many honours while playing for a squad full of exceptional talent is truly unique. In terms of defence, he should be listed first on the team sheet. He cannot be ranked behind Aymeric Laporte, Manuel Akanji, John Stones, or Nathan Ake in the pecking order.

 

Akanji and Ake have had a strong start to the season, with the former exceeding most expectations. Nonetheless, Dias remains the top central defender. As a result, he should take the initiative, particularly in difficult encounters.

With City losing ground in the title race, the manager will need to make changes when the league resumes next month. Dias will be reinstated as the team’s number one centre defender.
