Darwin Núñez has been given a five-match suspension from international play after he jumped into the crowd during a confrontation between Uruguay and Colombia fans. Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur has also been handed a four-match ban, but these suspensions won’t affect their club play. The incident occurred after Núñez’s Uruguay team lost 1-0 in the Copa America semi-final.
Núñez reportedly climbed into the crowd to protect his loved ones and attempted to throw a foldable chair, though a security guard intervened to prevent anyone from getting hurt. In addition to the suspension, Núñez has been fined £15,145. Three other Uruguayan players—Mathías Olivera, Ronaldo Araujo, and José Giménez—have received three-match bans as well.
Núñez will miss Uruguay’s upcoming friendly against Guatemala and four crucial World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay, Venezuela, Peru, and Ecuador. Uruguay currently holds second place behind Argentina after six matches, with the top six teams automatically qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
In a heated post-match interview, Atlético Madrid defender Giménez expressed frustration over the lack of security for players’ families, stating, “Let me say something before they cut you off because they won’t let us speak into the microphone. They don’t want me to talk about what’s happening, but this is a disaster.”
