Former Premier League defender Andre Wisdom has returned to the professional football scene after a four-year absence following a traumatic incident. The 31-year-old has signed a short-term deal with Northern Irish club Derry City.
Wisdom, who launched his career at Liverpool, made 22 appearances for the club and shared the pitch with legends such as Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, and Luis Suarez. He later enjoyed loan spells at West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City before making a permanent move to Derby County.
In 2020, Wisdom’s career was derailed when he was violently attacked by masked assailants in Liverpool, who stole his watch and inflicted stab wounds to his head and buttocks. The attack had a profound impact on him, and while he returned to the field a year later, he admitted that his game was not the same following several surgeries.
After a period of being without a club, Wisdom joined non-league Warrington Town for the previous season. His new contract with Derry City marks a significant step forward. Reflecting on his journey, Wisdom shared, “I’m thrilled to have a job again. My determination never wavered, though it often felt like the path was blocked. I’m fit and ready to go, having completed a full pre-season, and I’m thankful for this chance.”
With his new chapter at Derry City, Wisdom looks to rebuild his career and put his past challenges behind him.
