Manchester United currently have Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee as their primary strikers but are still frequently linked with new forwards. It raises the question: why would they seek another player for a position they seemingly have covered? Despite their mixed transfer success in recent years, pursuing another striker would be a questionable move even by their standards.
One player who has been a persistent target is Brighton & Hove Albion’s rising star, Evan Ferguson. The young Irish talent has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for some time now.
According to the Daily Star, Manchester United, led by Dan Ashworth, is preparing a modest offer of around £50 million for Ferguson. However, the club is reportedly concerned that Chelsea might outbid them if they delay their offer. Brighton, however, values Ferguson at £100 million, and United’s bid is far below this asking price. With Brighton unlikely to entertain such a low offer, it casts doubt on the likelihood of this transfer happening.
Brighton is known for being financially stable and rarely needs to sell players to balance their books. They typically sell for more than they spend, so if they stick to their £100 million valuation for Ferguson, it could effectively end Manchester United’s pursuit.
Given that Manchester United has recently invested heavily in the striker position, spending £100 million on another forward may not be the most prudent use of their transfer funds. The club has other areas that need attention, and it would be wiser for them to reconsider their targets and focus on more pressing needs.
