Matthijs De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui have arrived at Munich Airport ahead of their transfer to Manchester United.

United agreed to sign De Ligt and Mazraoui over the weekend, bringing the club closer to completing a remarkable double swoop from Bayern Munich that will alter Erik ten Hag’s defense.

De Ligt is expected to enter a £43 million deal, with the Red Devils paying roughly £38 million upfront and another £5 million in add-ons.

The Netherlands international, who was a main goal for Ten Hag this summer, will sign a five-year contract with the option to extend for another 12 months.

On Monday, both players were seen arriving at Munich Airport ahead of completing their moves to the Red Devils, with De Ligt and Mazraoui scheduled to fly to Manchester today.

The two worked with Ten Hag at Ajax and are said to be eager to work with him again.

The United manager’s aim heading into the new season has been to strengthen his backline.

Morocco is back. Mazraoui is in the final year of his contract with Bayern and can also play left defence, a position that United has struggled with in recent months.

The double swoop continues the heavy spending in the first summer under Sir Jim Ratcliffe

Since Mino Raiola’s death in 2022, the couple has had the same agent, Rafaela Pimenta.

Mazraoui’s transfer had been contingent on Aaron Wan-Bissaka leaving Old Trafford.

West Ham agreed a £15 million fee with United for the full back, but the former Crystal Palace player had to settle financial matters with the Red Devils before joining the East London side.

De Ligt, 25, will arrive in a £43m switch, with the Dutch defender set to pen a five-year contract

However, on Sunday night, United secured an agreement with Wan-Bissaka, who is scheduled to have his Hammers medical on Monday, with the defender’s departure freeing up cash for the double swoop of Mazraoui and De Ligt.

Ten Hag had been tight-lipped on the status of the moves following Saturday’s Community Shield against archrivals Manchester City.

‘No, I can’t (provide further information on the deals),’ he replied. ‘We will make an announcement when we have any news. Until then, we’ll work with the squad that is available.

Mazraoui is a right back, but can also fill in at left back which will be a huge boost to United

Their arrivals coincide with United’s ongoing injury crisis.

Before the Community Shield, United had only three healthy senior defenders, but Harry Maguire fought through 58 minutes of action.

Luke Shaw, Victor Lindelof, and Tyrell Malacia were all absent at Wembley, while £59 million summer signing Leny Yoro is expected to miss three months due to foot surgery.

Meanwhile, Lisandro Martinez played out of position at left back, while Facundo Pellistri took over at right back for much of the second half.

And Ten Hag confessed that his defence is still a work in progress heading into the season.

The double swoop continues the high spending of the first summer under Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

De Ligt, 25, will arrive in a £43 million transfer, with the Dutch defender poised to sign a five-year contract.

Mazraoui is a right defender, but can also fill in as a left back, which will be a great boost for United.

‘It’s apparent we have flaws (in defence), and we need to work,’ he said. ‘The players must work in order to be available, as do the personnel.

‘We should have a good collaboration with the guys who are available.’

De Ligt and Mazraoui will join Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee at Old Trafford this summer, bringing United’s total investment to above £150 million.

United’s Premier League campaign begins on Friday night with a home game against Fulham, following their Community Shield defeat to City on penalties.
