Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has agreed to a new contract, set to make him the highest-paid player at Old Trafford, surpassing even Casemiro’s £350,000 weekly salary. The new contract will extend until June 2027, with an option to extend until 2028.
This development, reported by Fabrizio Romano, puts an end to the speculation surrounding the Portugal international’s future. Fernandes was previously earning £220,000 per week. He had been linked with a potential exit after United’s disappointing eighth-place finish in the Premier League last season, which resulted in them missing out on European competition.
Fernandes had hinted at a possible departure earlier, suggesting he would evaluate his options after the Euros. In April, he told DAZN Portugal: “A player always has to want to be here, but at the same time, you have to want him to stay. At the moment, I feel there’s that on both sides. So, if you want me to be very honest, if I have to think about not continuing in the Premier League.”
However, he has now reaffirmed his commitment to United. According to Romano, Fernandes’ new salary will be at the “top MUFC level,” and the contract will be finalized before the transfer window closes.
The 29-year-old is pivotal to Erik ten Hag’s strategy, with many believing that the team should be built around him. Last season, Fernandes created the most chances in the Premier League (114) and has scored 54 goals in 159 appearances since joining in January 2020. He has also provided 41 assists during this time.
Fernandes joined Manchester United in a transfer that initially cost £47 million, potentially rising to £68 million. Alongside Alejandro Garnacho, he was one of United’s standout performers in the recent Community Shield, where they lost to Manchester City on penalties. Fernandes played a crucial role, assisting in the opening goal before the match ended 7-6 in City’s favor during the shootout.
