Liverpool are intensifying their pursuit of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi. Despite having strengthened their midfield last summer with the additions of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Wataru Endo, the Reds remain eager to enhance their squad further, particularly seeking a top-quality player for the number six role.
Recent reports suggest that Liverpool have added Zubimendi to their list of targets and are preparing to initiate negotiations with Real Sociedad. According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool is currently in talks with the Basque club and is actively working to secure a deal for the Euro 2024 winner.
It is still uncertain whether Real Sociedad will insist on Zubimendi’s €60 million (£51.5 million) release clause or if they are open to negotiating a lower fee with Liverpool. Despite previous indications that Zubimendi was content to stay at Real Sociedad, recent reports indicate that the Spain international is now keen on making an immediate move to Liverpool.
Liverpool faces competition from other clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester United, and Barcelona, who have also shown interest in Zubimendi. However, Liverpool might have an advantage due to Zubimendi’s connections with former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso, now the manager of Bayer Leverkusen. Alonso, who previously managed Zubimendi in Real Sociedad’s B team and shares the same agency with him, could influence Zubimendi’s decision.
The 25-year-old midfielder has made 188 competitive appearances for Real Sociedad, contributing to their Copa del Rey victory in 2019-20 and their Champions League qualification in 2022-23. Zubimendi also played a role in Spain’s successful Euro 2024 campaign, including a notable performance as a substitute in the final against England.
