While many Premier League players have returned to training, Virgil van Dijk is still taking it easy and enjoying a well-deserved break.
The central defender had a memorable end to the previous season, playing a key role in Liverpool’s Champions League triumph and later competing for the Netherlands in the Nations League, where they finished second to Portugal.
Van Dijk recently attended Wimbledon for the first time, immersing himself in the action on Centre Court. He watched Simona Halep dominate Elina Svitolina with a 6-1, 6-3 victory to secure her place in the Wimbledon final. He also witnessed Serena Williams’ impressive win over Barbora Strycova, 6-1, 6-2, in the other semi-final.
In a chat with Wimbledon’s official Twitter account, Van Dijk reflected on Liverpool’s Champions League success, saying, “It’s been a while since the final, so I’ve enjoyed a nice break and am thrilled to be here.”
Regarding his Wimbledon experience, he shared, “I’ve seen a few matches on TV recently, and being here in person feels special. I’m excited for the games today; it promises to be a great day.”
Van Dijk relished the opportunity to attend a sporting event without the usual competitive stress, commenting, “It’s fantastic. I’m just here to enjoy the games, have a drink, and relax.”
When discussing the solitary nature of tennis compared to football, he remarked, “In football, I get support from my teammates, but tennis players have to handle it on their own. They may have a great coach cheering from the stands, but it’s all on them.”
Liverpool’s pre-season is set to begin on Thursday night with a fixture again
