Rasmus Hojlund has been granted a fresh Manchester United jersey number for the upcoming season, hinting at the number Joshua Zirkzee might wear. United confirmed on social media that Hojlund will sport a new squad number in the upcoming campaign.
The Danish striker was unveiled as the club’s new No. 9 with the declaration: “Ready to lead the line.” United also shared a joyful photo of Hojlund holding up his new shirt, accompanied by the caption: “Let’s cook.”
Hojlund takes over the illustrious shirt number from Anthony Martial, who departed Old Trafford following the expiration of his contract. Recent notable wearers of the No. 9 shirt for United include Dimitar Berbatov and Andy Cole.
Last summer, upon joining from Atalanta, Hojlund initially wore the No. 11 shirt. Before his move to Italy, he previously wore the No. 9 jersey at Austrian side Sturm Graz.
Hojlund, who scored 16 goals and provided two assists in 43 games during his debut season in England, has also been included in Erik ten Hag’s 29-man squad for their USA tour.
Meanwhile, new signing Zirkzee is poised to take over the No. 11 shirt from Hojlund. The Dutch forward recently completed a £36.5 million move from Bologna. Zirkzee wore No. 11 during his first season with Bologna before switching to No. 9. At Bayern Munich, he also donned No. 32, which has been vacant at United since Sam Johnstone’s departure in 2018.
