Manchester United included a controversial clause in Mason Greenwood’s transfer to Marseille, according to reports. The 22-year-old forward completed a £27 million move to Marseille last week, signing a contract until 2029. Getafe, where Greenwood spent a loan spell last year, will receive 20% of the transfer fee, as reported by The Telegraph.
Marseille agreed to pay £20 million upfront with an additional £7 million in potential add-ons. United’s deal reportedly includes a significant clause where they will receive 50% of any profit from Greenwood’s future sale, and they have also secured a buy-back clause.
The inclusion of the buy-back clause has raised eyebrows, as it hypothetically allows Greenwood to return to Old Trafford in the future. Such clauses are common in transfers involving academy graduates, although it is deemed highly unlikely that Greenwood will actually make a return to United.
Greenwood’s recent career has been tumultuous. In January 2022, he was suspended by Manchester United following serious allegations including attempted rape, assault, and coercive behavior towards a woman. All charges were dropped in February 2023 after a key witness withdrew, and Greenwood has maintained his innocence throughout.
Despite the legal resolution, Greenwood’s move to Marseille has sparked controversy among some fans. The hashtag #GreenwoodNotWelcome emerged as a protest against his transfer, and Marseille’s mayor, Benoit Payan, publicly criticized the club for signing Greenwood, suggesting it would bring shame.
Responding to the controversy, Greenwood acknowledged the debate but expressed a desire not to fuel further controversy. He emphasized focusing on his future with Marseille and rebuilding his life with his partner and their daughter, born last year.
Greenwood’s potential return to Manchester United was considered but ultimately rejected due to public backlash. Instead, he spent last season on loan at Getafe, where he scored eight goals in La Liga.
The situation underscores the complexities surrounding transfers involving controversial players and the broader social impact of such decisions in football.
