Man Utd debuted their new signing Leny Yoro in a 2-0 friendly victory against Rangers last night (20/7). Yoro, recently transferred to Man Utd for a record fee of €62 million earlier this week, is an 18-year-old French player coached by Erik Ten Hag. He featured prominently in the starting lineup alongside veteran Jonny Evans at Murrayfield (Scotland).
Yoro quickly adapted and impressed in his Man Utd debut, displaying mature defensive skills and contributing to attacking plays from the back, an area where Man Utd struggled last season. Notably, midfielder Jadon Sancho also started. The English player had previously clashed with Coach Ten Hag in September last year, leading to his exclusion from the first team and subsequent training with the youth squad. Sancho was loaned to Borussia Dortmund in the latter half of the previous season and had been subject to transfer rumors, but now appears to be reconciling with Ten Hag.
“For me, it’s really unbelievable,” Sancho told MUTV after the match. “It was a really good game from the whole team. I’m pleased with my performance and hope we can continue like this.”
Ten Hag fielded a mix of regular first-team players including Andre Onana, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jonny Evans, Casemiro, Mason Mount, and Amad Diallo. However, Antony, Victor Lindelof, and Marcus Rashford were absent for various reasons.
Amad put Man Utd ahead in the first half with a left-footed shot into the bottom corner in the 39th minute, maintaining a 1-0 lead going into halftime. Ten Hag made wholesale changes, substituting all 10 outfield players at halftime and introducing a host of young players in the second half. Joe Hugill, among them, doubled the lead for Man Utd with a powerful goal in the 70th minute. Man Utd secured a 2-0 victory overall.
This marks Man Utd’s first win in their preseason preparations, following a 0-1 loss to Rosenberg on July 15.
Next, Man Utd will head to the United States for further friendlies, facing Arsenal on July 28. Coach Ten Hag expressed satisfaction with the club’s significant signings of Yoro and Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee. Currently, Yoro is training with Man Utd while Zirkzee is resting after participating in Euro 2024 with the Netherlands.
