Man Utd has secured the signing of defender Leny Yoro for a fee reaching up to 62 million euros – nearly matching what they spent on acquiring Bruno Fernandes. According to The Athletic, Yoro is en route from France to England for a medical at Man Utd. The defender has decided against moving to Real Madrid, as originally planned. Yoro was previously a top target for Real Madrid this summer.
Information about Man Utd’s involvement in this deal has only recently surfaced. Yoro was reportedly set on joining Bernabeu, but Man Utd convinced him with their own specific plan.
As per reports, Leny Yoro, aged 18, could become a pivotal figure in Man Utd’s defense. This proposition is highly appealing for an up-and-coming star compared to potentially being a backup at Real Madrid. However, journalist David Ornstein notes that Man Utd’s substantial offer was the primary reason why Yoro and Lille couldn’t refuse. Real Madrid was unwilling to spend over 25 million euros given Yoro’s contract situation, with just one year remaining. In contrast, Man Utd is ready to pay 62 million euros, including add-ons, to persuade the French club to sell the player. Lille FC’s president personally persuaded Yoro to move to England.
Born in 2005, Leny Yoro came through Lille’s youth academy. He has represented France at U23 level and has been involved with various French youth teams in the past. The defender has not yet been called up to the senior national team by coach Deschamps.
Yoro made his Ligue 1 debut in the 2021/2022 season at just under 17 years old. Last season, he played 43 matches for his club, scoring 3 goals. Standing at 1.90 meters tall, Yoro possesses a significant advantage in aerial duels. His technical ability is also considered strong.
Man Utd hopes that Leny Yoro will be a crucial addition to their defense in the upcoming season. The Red Devils have recently parted ways with Kambwala, Raphael Varane, and possibly Maguire and Lindelof in the coming days. It is understood that Man Utd is still negotiating with De Ligt and is prepared to spend heavily for Bayern Munich’s players.
