LAS VEGAS (AP)— For USA Basketball, the path to the Paris Olympics has begun with a victory.
Anthony Davis scored 13 points, Stephen Curry added 12, and the United States defeated Canada 86-72 on Wednesday night to kick off its pre-Paris Games training camp.
Jrue Holiday scored 11 points and Anthony Davis added 10 for the United States, which has four more exhibition games before heading to France.
Canada’s RJ Barrett scored 12 points, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks each had ten.
President Barack Obama attended the game, as did numerous NBA coaches and scores of USA Basketball dignitaries in town to commemorate the federation’s 50th anniversary. Among them are Jerry Colangelo, Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Dawn Staley, Lisa Leslie, Teresa Edwards, Swin Cash, Lindsay Whalen, and numerous others.
USA Basketball reported that the total attendance was 20,757, a record for any game at T-Mobile Arena.
The United States was down 11-1 midway through the first quarter, having missed their opening six shots. The rest of the half saw the United States score 40 points and Canada score 22, with the Americans shooting 18 of 28 for 64.3%. The lead was 41-33 at halftime, and the Americans extended it to 69-54 entering the fourth quarter.
