Klay Thompson will join the Dallas Mavericks after agreeing to a $50 million sign-and-trade with the Golden State Warriors. Thompson has spent his whole career with the Warriors, but he is now ready for a new chapter in Dallas.
In the three-team agreement, Golden State will receive a pair of second-round picks.
Now that the deal has been completed, information is spreading about fissures in the Warriors’ relationship with Thompson. ESPN commentator Richard Jefferson recounted a story that highlighted the idea that things weren’t going well between the two groups.
“This is on Christmas Day [this season]…” I come off the lift, see Klay, and say, ‘Klay, what’s up? Hey, man, keep your mental health in check. He’s like, ‘Man, tell them to pay me my money.’… “He has a right to be mad.”
Jefferson stated, “This is on Christmas Day [of this season].” I come off the lift, see Klay, and say, ‘Klay, what’s up? Hey, man, keep your mental health in check. He says, ‘Man, tell ’em to pay me my money.’ “He has a right to be mad.”
This comes after a report from Warriors insider Jason Dumas of 95.7 The Game, which detailed additional difficulties.
“In the last three years, I know Draymond has assaulted people and gotten himself suspended from the court. I am telling you this. Klay has been just as exhausting behind the scenes. It isn’t as loud because you aren’t stomping on someone’s chest. How do you suppose it goes in practice if he’s banging things on the bench, sulking and acting out on the court? How do you imagine things are in the locker room? It’s been uncomfortable. “It just does not come out as loudly as Draymond,” Dumas explained.
In the fourth quarter of a 2024 NBA postseason play-in game at the Golden 1 Centre, Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson (11) sits on the bench against the Sacramento Kings.
Despite Klay Thompson’s departure to the Mavericks, the Warriors are performing one last act for the second member of the Splash Brothers. The team confirmed that they will retire his number 11 and display it in the rafters at a later date.
Despite Stephen Curry’s status as the Warriors’ key star, Klay Thompson played an important role in their victory. His trade to the Mavericks might be painful. But all supporters can do is accept that he has gone on to another franchise. Fortunately, the organisation remembered his influence before he suited up in a new shirt, and they added some fresh players for the season.
The Warriors revealed the move in their most recent statement.
“We can’t overstate Klay Thompson’s incredible and legendary contributions with the Warriors during his 13 years with the team, highlighted by four NBA championships, six trips to the NBA Finals, five NBA All-Stare Game appearances, and several NBA records, including the most points ever scored in a quarter in NBA history and the most 3-point field goals in a game,” according to the organisation.
“Klay’s legacy will endure forever. We eagerly await the day when we can retire his #11 jersey at Chase Centre, where he will join a slew of Warriors legends, including those who helped construct this current dynasty, himself included. We appreciate Klay’s contributions and wish him the best as he embarks on the next stage of his adventure,” they concluded.
