Klay Thompson, an NBA player, took a vacation Thursday night before the Warriors’ game against the Portland Trail Blazers.
However, two young fans and one devoted parent in attendance at Moda Centre were disappointed to learn Thompson would be on the bench, forcing them to cheer on the Splash Brothers’ teammates while donning his No. 1 Washington State jersey.
Joe Walker of Spokane, Wash., told NBC Sports Bay Area that he purchased Warriors-Blazers tickets for his two children, Gus and Mac, as a Christmas present in November. Thompson is the boys’ favourite player, and the Walkers are all “huge” Washington State supporters.
When Warriors senior vice president of communications Raymond Ridder learned about the Walker family’s dilemma, he immediately contacted Joe Walker through X, formerly known as Twitter.
What followed was pure joy, as Thompson and several other Warriors players made apologies with the young fans by meeting with them following the 100-92 victory over the Blazers.
After all was said and done, Joe Walker made it clear who Dub Nation should thank: Ridder.
What began as a disappointing night for the Walker family quickly turned into pure delight when they met not only their favourite player, but an entire Golden State club determined to offer them with an unforgettable experience.
