Liverpool have not had the best of luck with Italian players in recent memory, but the arrival of Riccardo Calafiori could potentially change that narrative. While Andrea Dossena’s highlight moment came with a memorable goal against Real Madrid in the 2009 Champions League, he struggled to displace John Arne Riise at left-back and returned to Serie A by January 2010.
Similarly, Alberto Aquilani was touted as the successor to Xabi Alonso in midfield but saw his Liverpool career marred by persistent injuries. The likes of Fabio Borini, Mario Balotelli, Gabriel Paletta, and Daniele Padelli also failed to make a lasting impact at Anfield, reflecting a mixed record for Italian imports.
In reality, these players were exceptions, seeking challenges outside Serie A where most Italian stars prefer staying close to home. Only three out of Italy’s 26 players at EURO 2024 ply their trade outside Serie A, with two of them being goalkeepers. Jorginho, born in Brazil, represents the other exception.
However, Liverpool’s disappointing streak with Italian signings could potentially turn around with Riccardo Calafiori. The 22-year-old defender has made significant strides, notably under Thiago Motta’s coaching at Bologna, contributing to their qualification for the Champions League last season.
His performances have not gone unnoticed, earning him a pivotal role under Italy’s national team manager Luciano Spalletti. Despite an unfortunate own goal that led to Italy’s loss against Spain in their second group stage match at EURO 2024, Calafiori has shown resilience and skill since recovering from a severe injury sustained in October 2018 while playing for AS Roma’s youth team.
Standing at 1.88 meters tall, Calafiori excels in aerial duels, winning 71.4% of contested situations last season. His adaptability to play as a left-sided center-back or wing-back makes him a versatile asset, traits that would likely appeal to Liverpool manager Arne Slot.
While Juventus has shown interest in Calafiori, financial constraints may prevent them from making a serious bid, potentially opening the door for Liverpool to swoop in. With his promising attributes and recent form, Calafiori could represent a perfect fit for the Reds, providing much-needed reinforcement to their defensive lineup on Merseyside.
