Lisandro Martinez of Manchester United got off to a great start as Argentina defeated a determined Canadian team to begin their Copa America campaign.

The centre-back for United was selected to start alongside Cristian Romero, and he is looking to hold onto his well-earned position for the duration of the competition.

Although La Albiceleste prevailed 2-0, they were unable to maintain their lead at the half because a resolute Canadian team battled back and had numerous opportunities to score as well. Both teams squandered crucial opportunities.

Argentina ultimately took the lead through Julian Alvarez of Manchester City in the 49th minute, but they had to wait until the 88th minute to seal the victory when Lautaro Martinez finished off a brilliant through ball from Lionel Messi.

The World Cup winners had 19 shots against Canada’s 10 and the majority of the ball (65%).

Martinez contributed to his team’s clean sheet and received a 7.2 rating from Sofascore for his performance that evening.

The fact that he completed another important ninety minutes of play—his third straight for the national team—will hopefully give United supporters hope that his injury problems are firmly behind him.

In response to a risky Canadian counterattack, he made two clearances and one interception.

He did not engage in any aerial combat during the game, although he did win two tackles and two of his four ground duels.

Martinez played with excellent discipline, picking up just one foul.

El Carnicero was outstanding with the ball as usual, providing Argentina with a strong foundation from which to attack as he usually does for United.

With 98 ball touches, he completed 83 of 89 passes for a 93% completion ratio. Additionally, he made one crucial pass and set up a huge opportunity with a tremendous through ball over the top that was not completed by an inefficient Argentine attack.

In their quest to win two straight games, the defending champions will take on Chile on Tuesday night (Wednesday am UK time). Martinez will be looking to log another 90 minutes of playtime.

Alejandro Garnacho, United’s other participant, was unable to come off the bench once more and will be hoping for a chance to make his tournament debut in his country’s upcoming match.
