FULL TIME 2-0: Germany assert home advantage, Szoboszlai suffers consecutive defeats as captain for the first time

Germany secured their place in the next round of EURO 2024 by defeating Marco Rossi’s Hungary 2-0. Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gundogan found the net for Germany. Previously, the tournament hosts had started with a commanding 5-1 win against Scotland, whereas Hungary suffered a 3-1 loss to Switzerland.Image

Musiala opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after a stumble by Willi Orban allowed Ilkay Gundogan to set him up with a deft touch. Shortly after, Manuel Neuer made a crucial save from a Dominik Szoboszlai free kick. Hungary had a goal disallowed for offside just before halftime, and Germany’s defense held firm with Manuel Neuer denying Roland Sallai and Barnabas Varga missing a clear header.Image

Liverpool midfielder Szoboszlai led his national team in Wednesday’s match in Stuttgart, where goals from Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gundogan secured the win for Germany. Despite Hungary’s efforts, including two near-misses from Szoboszlai shortly after Musiala’s goal, they couldn’t find an equalizer. Manuel Neuer made a crucial save from Szoboszlai’s free-kick and Jonathan Tah blocked another attempt from him in the penalty area.

Gundogan’s goal in the 67th minute sealed the victory for Germany and marked Hungary’s second defeat in the tournament. They will conclude the group stage by facing Scotland, led by Andy Robertson, on Sunday.Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai brought back down to earth by teammate - Liverpool Echo

Gundogan was pivotal in both goals for Germany, assisting the first and scoring the second with a composed finish from Maximilian Mittelstadt’s cross. Peter Gulasci made several important saves for Hungary, denying Joshua Kimmich and Leroy Sane, while Kimmich himself cleared a shot off the line to preserve Germany’s clean sheet.
