0 tackles, 0 crosses, 0 aerial duels: Diogo Dalot struggles to make an impact as Portugal secure late winner against Czechia in Euro 2024 opener

Diogo Dalot of Manchester United played 63 minutes as Portugal opened their Euro 2024 campaign with an exciting 2-1 victory over Czechia at Germany’s Red Bull Arena.

Czechia broke the stalemate when Lukas Provod scored against the flow of play in the 62nd minute.Image

Their lead was short-lived, however, as a sloppy Czech defence allowed Robin Hranac to pass the ball into his own net. Diogo Jota thought he had scored the winner in the 86th minute when he headed in from close range, but the goal was called out because Cristiano Ronaldo was deemed to be offside in the build-up.

As it turned out, it didn’t matter much because Portugal eventually won, thanks to Francisco Conceicao, who was in the right place at the right time in the dying embers of the game to tap in the ball and seal the victory. Conceicao scored just 111 seconds after being forced into action by Portugal’s manager.

Dalot started in the right wing-back position in Roberto Martinez’s 3-4-3 formation. Portugal’s back three comprised of Ruben Dias, Pepe, and Nuno Mendes.

Dalot touched the ball 45 times while on the pitch.

He connected with his Selecao teammates on 33 of the 36 passes he attempted, resulting in a 92% individual pass completion rate. One of his passes was particularly important.Image

The United defender attempted to deliver only one cross. He was unable to locate his targeted victim.

He only took one shot, but it was off-target and caused no problems for Czech custodian Jindrich Stanek.

Dalot attempted two dribbles and only finished one. He also competed in two ground duels, winning only one.

The United star was not needed to compete in any air challenges.Image

Portugal is now third in Group F, behind leaders Turkey, which defeated Georgia 3-1 earlier on Tuesday, and one place ahead of Czechia.

Dalot and his teammates face Turkiye at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday.
