Holland defeated Poland 2-1 in their first match of Euro 2024.
Adam Buksa, standing in for Robert Lewandowski, scored Poland’s opener with a superb header. Cody Gakpo of Liverpool equalized shortly afterward with a deflected shot.
Wout Weghorst, formerly of Manchester United, entered the game with ten minutes remaining and swiftly secured the winning goal just two minutes later, making it 2-1 for Holland.
Throughout the match, the Dutch had 20 attempts on goal, their highest in a major tournament since 2014 against Costa Rica, although only three were on target.
In the closing stages, skipper Piotr Zielinski was substituted, with goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny taking over the captaincy.
Weghorst’s goal, his seventh in the last 11 international appearances, seemed to seal the victory for Ronald Koeman’s side, leaving the Oranje fans jubilant at the Volksparkstadion.
Despite Poland’s efforts, including substitutions late in the game, there was no late comeback, and Holland managed to hold on to their lead until the final whistle.
The win gives the Netherlands an early lead in Group D, with upcoming matches against France, Austria, and Poland determining their further progress in the tournament.
