Sergio Aguero confronts an opponent on his return for Manchester City, three years after quitting from professional football due to a heart issue

Sergio Aguero returned to Manchester City’s kit on Wednesday, and it didn’t take long for him to face an opponent as his club dropped its first match at The Soccer Tournament.

The 36-year-old Argentine resigned from football in 2021 due to a heart problem, but he returned to the pitch on Wednesday to lead his team, Aguero FC.

But it wasn’t the return to sky blue he had hoped for, as his club lost 6-3, with the Argentine star facing an opponent from Say Word FC in the second half as emotions mounted.

Aguero and the opponent appeared to exchange some heated words until Say Word’s custodian intervened – before one of the forward’s Team Aguero teammates worsened the situation by pushing the opponent Aguero was fighting with.

The great striker attempted six shots in the encounter but did not score, as Say Word surprised City supporters with a win.

But it didn't take long for him to square up to an opponent as tensions rose in the second halfWhile Aguero is the only ex-City player on his team for the competition, the English club is clearly interested in his participation.

Aguero’s team took the field wearing the club’s 2024-25 uniforms, while a display behind one of the fields featured the Premier League trophy and a photo of Aguero’s memorable title-winning goal against QPR.

The squad will play again on Wednesday night before taking against former Manchester United player Nani and his Nani FC on Wednesday.

The Soccer Tournament, in its second year, offers a $1 million winner-take-all reward in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

This year, squads from Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Burnley, Inter Milan, Villareal, and Wrexham travelled to North Carolina to compete.

Former NFL player J.J. Watt also played for Burnley (which he co-owns with his wife, Kealia), as did Marco Materazzi and Guiseppe Rossi.
