Arsenal have been criticized by football fans for posting a questionable social media update in the aftermath of Manchester United’s FA Cup triumph. Despite Arsenal’s own disappointing season, where they finished as Premier League runners-up and were eliminated from other cup competitions, the Gunners were keen to highlight their record as the most successful team in FA Cup history.
Immediately following United’s 2-1 victory over their rivals in the final, Arsenal posted a quiz on their official social media account, challenging fans to name the players who started in each of Arsenal’s seven FA Cup wins since the year 2000. The accompanying caption emphasized Arsenal’s “legacy” in the competition, stating that they have lifted the trophy a record 14 times.
However, this move by Arsenal has not been well-received by football supporters. Many have described the post as “embarrassing” and “shameless”, arguing that it was an unnecessary attempt by the Gunners to draw attention to their own achievements, rather than simply congratulating the deserving winners. Fans have accused Arsenal of being perpetually self-obsessed, with one reply stating “ALWAYS about them”.
The backlash highlights the perception that Arsenal’s social media actions were ill-timed and lacked the appropriate sportsmanship, especially given that the Gunners were eliminated from this season’s FA Cup much earlier than United, who went on to claim the trophy.
