Mothers know best, even if they are not your own.
Klay Thompson learned this in the nicest way possible when Sonya Curry, the mother of his teammate Steph Curry, gave him some heartfelt advise during a difficult moment last month.
In a recent visit on the “Your Mom” podcast, Sonya informed presenters Lisa McCaffrey (yep, the mother of another Bay Area celebrity) and Ashley Adamson about Thompson’s thankful response to her good comments.
Sonya Curry admits Klay Thompson thanked her for an encouraging Instagram comment – NBC Sports Bay Area and California
“[Thompson] texted me and was thanking me for it,” Sonya stated. “My mother’s heart just came out and I was like, ‘Dude.’”
Sonya left a positive remark on one of Thompson’s Instagram postings last month, after “NBA on TNT” commentator Charles Barkley stated the Splash Brother isn’t the same athlete after suffering back-to-back lower leg injuries.
“You don’t owe anyone any explanation!” Sonya wrote to Thompson on October 28. “You at your proclaimed ‘not the same’ self is still better than most of the current and past players in the NBA.”
Following Barkley’s remarks, Sonya told Thompson she wanted to see his “Champion’s smile” again, which was prompted by the 32-year-old’s sluggish start to the 2022-23 NBA season. It’s evident her son’s colleague appreciated the gesture.
Thompson took Barkley’s criticism to heart, chastising the Hall of Famer for his comments after the Warriors’ Oct. 27 loss to the Phoenix Suns.
“To hear someone say, ‘Oh, he’s not the same player as he was prior to the injuries,’ like, duh,” Thompson remarked following the game. “Who goes through that and comes back?” I’m not sure, but hearing that just made my heart hurt.
In reaction to Klay Thompson’s criticisms, Steph Curry’s mother, Sonya Curry, issued a stunning statement at the opportune time, stating that she is the true MVP. https://t.co/b6dcnvwvy5″ / X
“But you know, I’m going to internalize it and it’s going to be fuel for me to be even better.”
Along with Sonya, Thompson’s colleagues, including Steph Curry and his coach, Steve Kerr, spoke out in support of the Warriors star and four-time NBA champion.
In fact, Sonya confessed on the “Your Mom” podcast that Thompson, behind Steph, is her favorite Warrior.
With such a strong team behind him, Thompson should be able to recover faster than ever.
