Arsenal fans, predictably, made the same argument following Tottenham star Son Heung-min’s key miss against Manchester City.
The midweek encounter is expected to be vital in determining the identity of this year’s Premier League title winners, with a victory putting City two points ahead of Arsenal with one game remaining.
The first half was tense for both teams, with neither breaking the deadlock at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Erling Haaland finally calmed City fans down six minutes into the second half, tapping home from a yard out to give Pep Guardiola’s team the lead.
After Pedro Porro’s mistimed challenge on Jeremy Doku, the Golden Boot winner-elect clinched the deal with a penalty in stoppage time.
However, five minutes earlier, Son squandered a golden opportunity to tie the score for Spurs after breaking the offside trap.
However, when given a one-on-one opportunity against City replacement goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, the forward’s shot was saved by the German shot-stopper’s leg.
And, considering that the error stopped Spurs from equalising, which would have moved Arsenal closer to the title, Gunners fans made similar allegations on social media.
One wrote: “Son missed that on purpose, I won’t be convinced otherwise.”
A second said: “Son missed that on purpose. Proper Spurs man!”
A third added: “Son has just given Arsenal their Iheanacho moment. Now you know how it feels.”
A fourth admitted: “I have just scissor kicked my TV. Son missed a 1v1.”
And a fifth said: “Son missed the chance of his name being sang by Arsenal fans for life.”
Of course, with Spurs requiring all three points to keep their Champions League ambitions alive, their players were keen to return to Europe’s premier continental competition – and Son’s look of anguish after the mistake said it all.
Other non-Arsenal fans praised Ortega’s outstanding stop, with Son’s attempt heading for the bottom left corner as he tried for his 18th goal of the season.
Meanwhile, City manager Pep Guardiola slumped onto his back following the miss, his reaction capturing the entire picture of a frantic second half at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
