Liverpool Football Club is rumored to be revisiting their pursuit of goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, whom they initially attempted to sign ten years ago. McCarthy, whose contract with Southampton is set to expire this summer after an eight-year stint, has also attracted attention from other clubs, including Celtic and Newcastle United.
Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation requires attention, with Adrian’s contract nearing its conclusion and the likelihood of him securing another one-year deal at the age of 37 appearing improbable, especially under the management of a new coach. Moreover, Caoimhin Kelleher’s impressive performances have fueled his aspirations for regular first-team action, prompting Liverpool to reassess their goalkeeping options and potentially compile a shortlist of potential candidates.
Consequently, Liverpool has reignited their interest in Alex McCarthy, whom they failed to secure in 2014. At that time, Liverpool sought a goalkeeper to provide competition for Simon Mignolet, and McCarthy, who had previously played under manager Brendan Rodgers at Reading, emerged as a target. However, McCarthy opted to join Queen’s Park Rangers, citing the opportunity for increased playing time as the primary factor influencing his decision.
Unfortunately, McCarthy’s spell at QPR did not unfold as anticipated, as he made just three Premier League appearances during the season that saw the club relegated. Subsequently, he was sold to Crystal Palace, where his career stagnated. It took several more years and a subsequent transfer to Southampton before McCarthy finally secured regular playing time.
There were rumors circulating in 2019 that Liverpool came close to acquiring McCarthy when Mignolet departed. However, they ultimately opted to sign Adrian on a free transfer instead. Now, a decade after rejecting Liverpool’s initial pursuit, McCarthy may have the opportunity to rectify his decision and potentially join the club.
