Liverpool’s new manager’s contract is valued at around £9 million, including additional fees. Coach Slot will take charge of a talented Liverpool squad, combining experienced players with promising young talents.
However, former Dutch and PSV winger Rene van der Gijp believes that the Dutch coach will need to gradually phase out the team’s two most experienced players, captain Virgil van Dijk and star forward Salah.
In a conversation with Vandaag Inside, quoted by TBR Football, Van der Gijp said, “I think Coach Slot will do his best if he has the courage to replace players like Salah and Van Dijk. I think both of them should leave as soon as possible because their value is too high. I read that Dortmund might be interested in Van Dijk as a replacement for Hummels. Then, Van Dijk will play in a slightly easier league. Salah should also leave Liverpool. It would be best for him. Salah has shown great performances year after year. But now, fatigue is starting to show on Salah’s face. That’s not easy in a tough league. As Salah’s form declines, his priority will also decrease.”
Van der Gijp’s comments came shortly after Salah and manager Klopp had a heated argument on the sidelines during a recent match. They exchanged words before Salah was brought on as a substitute in the 79th minute.
Salah has recently been on the bench in two out of the last three Premier League matches. However, he remains one of Liverpool’s top performers. According to statistics, Salah has scored 24 goals and provided 13 assists in 41 appearances across all competitions. Meanwhile, Van Dijk has played 45 matches, scored 4 goals, and provided 2 assists. These two stars are undoubtedly among the greatest players in Liverpool’s recent history.
Mohamed Salah, signed from Roma for £34.3 million in 2017, is the club’s third-highest goal scorer of all time with a total of 210 goals in 346 matches. He has also recorded 88 assists in those games.
Virgil van Dijk, the current captain of Liverpool, joined the club from Southampton for £75 million, just a few months after Salah. The Dutch defender has made 267 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 23 goals and providing 12 assists. Together, this duo has won two Carabao Cups, the UEFA Champions League, the Premier League, the FA Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
