”PSG may have been at a disadvantage against Dortmund, but the biggest loser in the match at Signal Iduna Park was Ten Hag,” wrote Amos Murphy, co-founder of the City Report podcast, on the internet. “Sancho played the best in the game, and Dortmund’s performance was also enticing.”
In the 1-0 victory of Dortmund over PSG on the evening of May 1st, Sancho dribbled past opponents 12 times, the highest number in a Champions League match since 2008 when Lionel Messi dribbled past Manchester United players 16 times. The English player received the highest rating in the game, despite not scoring or providing assists, according to statistical agencies.
Sancho is still under contract with Manchester United until the summer of 2026, but he is currently on loan at Dortmund for these two seasons due to disagreements with Ten Hag. Sancho publicly stated that Ten Hag was “dishonest” regarding his training performance not meeting the requirements. The 24-year-old winger was disciplined and can only return to play for Manchester United if he apologizes to the Dutch coach. After nearly a year, Sancho still hasn’t apologized.
Sports website Bleacher Report also posted a satirical meme mocking Ten Hag, suggesting that he would be provoked when seeing Sancho performing well at Dortmund. The JFF Football website wrote, “Sancho is still the best winger, so Ten Hag is really terrible for choosing Antony over him. Sancho was right to feel disrespected at Manchester United.”
Former defender Rio Ferdinand also praised Sancho’s performance against PSG and hinted that there are still unresolved issues between Sancho and Ten Hag. “Sancho made the opponents look like they were dancing when he was the best player on the field,” said the former Manchester United star. “I want to know what happened to Sancho at Manchester United and why he wasn’t successful. But the positive thing for Manchester United is that there will be many teams wanting to buy Sancho after this match.”
However, there are also people who oppose criticizing Ten Hag when they see Sancho shine with Dortmund. Football analyst Benjamin Hunt commented, “It’s strange to see many Manchester United fans using Sancho to taunt Ten Hag. Sancho plays with street-style technique, but he has never truly demonstrated his abilities under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick, or Ten Hag.”
Sancho has only scored 12 goals in 82 appearances for Manchester United since joining the club in the summer of 2021. His performance for Dortmund has been much better, with 53 goals in 154 matches. His loan agreement with the German club will expire at the end of the season, and the 24-year-old player says he doesn’t know what the future holds.
According to Yahoo Sports, Ten Hag may be fired at the end of the season, which would give Sancho an opportunity to prove himself again at Manchester United.
