David De Gea, who participated in a training session with an English non-league club, has hinted that he might be ready to make a comeback to football.
The Spanish goalie was a member of Manchester United’s previous championship team.
Despite winning the Golden Glove the previous season, he spent twelve years at Old Trafford before leaving as a free agent last summer.
De Gea was famously dismissed by United on his wedding day in June, and he hasn’t found a new team as of yet.
After Newcastle’s No. 1 Nick Pope was injured, the 33-year-old was linked to both Al-Shabab of Saudi Arabia and Newcastle, but neither move happened.
There have been more recent rumors that he would be joining Real Betis in his native country.
Throughout his absence, De Gea has continued to reside in Manchester and has even attended United’s women’s matches while he looked for work.
The 45-cap Spain international has maintained his physical fitness through exercising on his own.
He released a three-word update about his future along with a video of himself working out earlier this week, hinting to a potential comeback.
The video was shot at Altrincham, his local non-league team, where players are competing for promotion in the National League play-offs.
By posting a new video of himself working on the field at J. Davidson Stadium accompanied with a “loading” symbol, De Gea has now given yet another indication that a move may be imminent.
In the meantime, the renowned former goaltender of United, Edwin van der Sar, has extended his support to the former Atletico Madrid star.
The Dutchman recalled how, after leaving Juventus in 2001, he had been in a similar situation. However, he had joined Fulham before moving to Old Trafford and winning the Champions League.
Van der Sar said, “David, keep the faith and believe as I had something similar in 2001 and look what that brought me in the end!” in response to another training video that De Gea had posted.
However, Graeme Souness, a legend of Liverpool, recently asserted that Erik ten Hag, the manager of United, erred in allowing the goalkeeper to depart on a free transfer and substituting Andre Onana.
“You need to set priorities,” he stated. You must endeavor to fortify the areas where players are most needed.
