Manchester United has signed goalkeeper Andre Onana to a five-year contract with the option to extend for another year at Old Trafford.

Manchester United agreed a contract with Inter for 51 million euros plus 4 million euros in add-ons earlier this week, and Onana had a medical at Carrington yesterday (July 20). 

Soon after, the Cameroonian goalkeeper headed to New York to join his new teammates on the club’s pre-season tour of America.

Onana will replace David de Gea as Manchester United’s number one goalkeeper, who departed the club on a free transfer last month. Coach Erik ten Hag is well familiar with Onana, a Cameroonian international who played 145 games for Ajax before going to Inter, where he impressed in the Champions League final last month.

Manchester United’s director of football, John Murtough, stated that Onana is the top pick to start next season.

“After Onana gained success in his career, we knew he would continue to contribute to the winning culture we are developing at the club. At 27 years old, Onana is already one of the top goalkeepers in the world, and we are certain that he can improve even further in the coming years.

Onana is believed to have worn shirt number 24 while at Manchester United. Thus, De Gea’s number one shirt at Manchester United still has no owner.
