Manchester United will look for a much-needed Premier League victory when they host Sheffield United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
United, who defeated the Blades 2-1 in the reverse meeting in October, have won none of their last five games, with Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final victory over Coventry City concluding in a draw before being won on penalties. United last won outside of a shootout against Liverpool in the FA Cup quarterfinals last month.
In terms of league form, United have not won since beating Everton 2-0 on March 9, leaving them winless in their last four games. It implies that anything less than three points against the relegation-threatened Blades will jeopardize Erik ten Hag’s job security.
United, despite taking a 3-0 lead at Wembley on Sunday, were second best after the 70th minute and capitulated in dramatic fashion. Ten Hag lost additional crucial players in the build-up to the trip to the capital, forcing him to use Casemiro as a temporary centre-back, and he may start there again against the Blades, as the Dutchman deals with new issues.
However, Andre Onana is fit and eligible for selection, therefore he is likely to start in goal against Chris Wilder’s team. The Cameroonian has played every minute of United’s Premier League campaign this season, and that trend is expected to continue.
In terms of the back four, United’s lack of choices means they may start with the same quartet that faced the Sky Blues, with Casemiro partnering Harry Maguire in the heart of the defence for the second straight game. Willy Kambwala joined Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans on the sidelines as they prepared for their trip to Wembley Stadium.
Due to a paucity of choices, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot should resume their full-back roles. Dalot began on the right, and Wan-Bissaka on the left, at Wembley.
However, Ten Hag will have to tackle a new challenge in midfield. Scott McTominay, who scored the opening goal against Coventry, is uncertain for the visit of the Blades, leaving the Reds short on choices.
Sofyan Amrabat and Mason Mount are expected to be sidelined again, which means Christian Eriksen might make his first start since the 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on January 14. Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes, who is nursing a hand injury, should team up with the Dane in the engine room, with Ten Hag hoping Fernandes will be fit.
Marcus Rashford is doubtful for the front three after being forced off late at Wembley Stadium. He was later seen strolling cautiously through the mixed zone.
Alejandro Garnacho also missed out against Mark Robins’ team, but Ten Hag feels he will be “fine” to join the squad. The possibility of Rashford being unavailable allows both Antony and Amad to compete for a starting spot, with the latter being more deserving, even if Ten Hag has previously preferred Antony above him and may do so again.
Rasmus Hojlund should start in the middle and lead the attack.
United’s anticipated line-up against Sheffield United is: Onana; Dalot, Casemiro, Maguire, Wan-Bissaka; Mainoo, Eriksen, Fernandes; Antony, Hojlund, and Garnacho.
