The Mavericks are worth watching as a “possible suitor” for Klay Thompson 👀

The Dallas Mavericks are “worth watching as a possible suitor” for Thompson, The Athletic’s Sam Amick wrote last Wednesday, citing league sources.

According to Spotrac, the Mavericks have already surpassed the 2024-25 luxury tax threshold, with over $173 million in taxable salary.

The Orlando Magic, who are looking for a shooter and have salary cap room, are also allegedly interested in Thompson if he decides to leave the Warriors, his lone NBA team.

Thompson recently completed a five-year, $190 million contract and will become an unrestricted free agent once the NBA playoffs conclude.

Last week, ESPN’s Zach Lowe claimed that Thompson’s representatives and the Warriors have not had significant contract talks in months.

Following the Warriors’ season-ending NBA Play-In Tournament loss to the Sacramento Kings last Tuesday, Curry, Green, and Dunleavy all stated publicly that they want Thompson back next season.Report: Mavericks 'worth watching' as possible Klay suitor - Yahoo Sports

Thompson’s future, however, is likely to be determined by the price he can fetch on the open market and the Warriors’ willingness or ability to pay it.

Dunleavy recognized that the Warriors need to cut salary for the upcoming 2024-25 NBA season, so signing Thompson to a contract worth significantly less than the $43 million he earned last season may be the only way for the four-time NBA champion to stay in the Bay Area for the foreseeable future.NBA rumors: Mavericks seen as a suitor for Klay Thompson / News - Basketnews.com

Thompson, who has made $266 million in career on-court salary, according to Spotrac, faces a difficult dilemma this summer: Accept the best possible offer, which may mean leaving the Warriors, or accept a below-market deal and likely conclude his Hall of Fame career in the Bay.
