Jamie Carragher believes the style of Manchester United’s FA Cup victory against Coventry City will cost Erik ten Hag his job at Old Trafford.
Although the Red Devils advanced to their second consecutive FA Cup final with a 4-2 penalty shootout victory over the Championship side following a 3-3 draw on Sunday, they were completely unconvincing. Former Liverpool defender Carragher believes United’s players would be “embarrassed” after squandering the victory, especially given their 3-0 lead.
He told Sky Sports: “We were all watching there at the end, and (Coventry manager) Mark Robins famously kept a Manchester United manager in his job, and I believe the outcome today cost a Manchester United manager his job. I don’t see how he can stay. I do not. I would guess that’s the most embarrassing locker room you’ve ever seen for a team that won a major game.”
Last season, United appeared to be advancing under Ten Hag, as they qualified for the Champions League and won the Carabao Cup. This season, however, they have little chance of finishing in the top four again; there doesn’t appear to be much of a strategy or a particular style of play under the Dutchman, and the 54-year-old is under increasing pressure to retain his position. A defeat against City in the FA Cup final could be the final nail in the coffin for the former Ajax manager.
