Man Utd ratings: Bruno Fernandes performs captain’s effort, but Mainoo struggles to dominate against Championship side

Manchester United almost avoided an FA Cup semi-final shock against Coventry City.

After leading 3-0, the Red Devils appeared to be on their way to next month’s final against rivals Manchester City.

Man Utd nearly escaped an FA Cup semi-final exit by defeating Coventry on penalties.

However, Coventry scored three late goals, one of which came at the death, to send the game into overtime.

The Championship side then thought they’d scored a 120th-minute winner, but it was brutally denied by VAR by the smallest margin.

Despite Casemiro missing the opening penalty, United won the shootout.

But who was United’s standout performer at Wembley?

Who had a game to forget?

SunSport’s Justin Allen shares his Man United player ratings.

ANDRE ONANA – 6

Victor Torp delivered one of the best volleys you’ve ever seen, and I made a world-class stop.

Aside from that, all he had to do was pluck the ball out of the goal three times (four if you consider the disallowed one) and have his bar rattled after losing to Simms in extra time.

DIOGO DALOT – 7

He made a terrific run and tackle to deny Haji Wright from passing through one-on-one with Onana, and he produced a fantastic low cross for McTominay’s opening goal.

Then, superbly, he tackled Simms as he was about to score from a few yards out.

HARRY MAGUIRE – 7

Old Slab Head scored United’s second goal with a header from a corner, his third of the season.

Along with Casemiro, the huge centre-back had little to worry about against Coventry until the second phase of the second half.

Almost scored a winner in extra time, but was denied by a stunning save by Bradley Collins.

CASEMIRO – 6

Played a deadly pass to open up the Coventry defence for Rashford to run on to, but the striker blasted his shot wide.

Then he forced a brilliant stop from Bradley Collins with a fierce drive that appeared destined for the top corner.

However, Simms was lost for Coventry’s goal and missed the shootout.

Casemiro, playing as a center defender, missed United’s first penalty.

AARON WAN-BISSAKA – 5

It was frustrating to move forward at times. Being a right footer on the left flank slows United down on that side.

Didn’t pull up any trees going forward against a Championship team, and then bizarrely turned his back on a Callum O’Hare shot that deflected off him to beat Onana.

Then he gave up a late penalty for handball.

Scott McTominay – 7

I broke the impasse by getting on the end of a fantastic Dalot pass.

With his tenth goal of the season, only Rasmus Hojlund (13) and Bruno Fernandes (13) have scored more for Erik ten Hag’s side this season.

He was also the first Scottish player to score for United at Wembley Stadium in thirty years, when Brian McClair did so against Chelsea.

KOBBIE MAINOO – 5.

Didn’t seem to accomplish anything for United.

Certainly didn’t dominate the midfield against a Championship team. At times, it feels a little lackluster.

Kobbie Mainoo had a forgettable game at midfield.

ALEJANDRO GARNACHO – 6

Fresh from apologizing to Erik ten Hag for liking social media remarks critical of his half-time substitute against Bournemouth, the 19-year-old was eager to make a good impression.

Had an early effort charged down, then caused havoc with a low cross that was cut away for a corner, and then wasted a chance on the run.

BRUNO FERNANDES -7

A terrific performance. Set one up and scored his 13th goal of the season with a deflected shot.

Manchester United almost got off to a flying start with an incredible flip that set up Alejandro Garnacho, followed by a smart corner to the kid in space, but he sliced it.

Provided the corner for United’s second goal and came close with a fantastic curler before netting with a powerful drive. Extra time rattled the bar.

He is the only player who has scored and assisted on 10 or more goals in four consecutive seasons.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes led by example.

MARCUS RASHFORD – 5.

It started brightly. When he received a magnificent Casemiro pass, he fired wide with intent. He should’ve put it away.

He had better days and will be disappointed not to be on the scoresheet.

Also, he made little effort to break up a Coventry counter-attack on the edge of their area, which resulted in the second goal.

Rasmus Hojlund – 5

Joel Latibeaudiere forced me off the ball when I tried to start an offensive.

Lack of supply made it difficult to create an impression against lower-league opponents. He did, however, score the winning penalty.

SUBSTITUTES

Rasmus Hojlund scored the winning penalty for United, while Antony converted for Garnacho at the 66th minute.

ERIKSEN (for Mainoo 72) 6

DIALLO (Rashford 90) 6

FORSON (McTominay 103) 6.
