The Warriors confront uncertainty with the potential departure of experienced talents Klay Thompson and Chris Paul following their playoff elimination, prompting coach Steve Kerr to express optimism for their return.
The Golden State Warriors’ postseason hopes were dashed when they lost to the Sacramento Kings 118-94 in the Play-In Tournament.
This setback caused coach Steve Kerr to discuss the future of some experienced players, including Klay Thompson, whose contract is coming to an end.
Thompson, who has been a key member of the Warriors since his draft in 2011, may seek free agency in July, according to sources like as Shams Charania of The Athletic and Adrian Wojnarowski at ESPN.
“We need Klay [Thompson] back,” Kerr stated following the loss to Sacramento. “He still has a considerable number of years left. I know I speak for everyone in the organization: we want him back. Obviously, there is business at hand, but Klay has meant so much to our franchise that we dearly want him back.”
Thompson had likely his worst game under Kerr against the Kings, scoring 0 points on 0/10 field goals and 0/6 three-pointers in 28 minutes. Thompson has only gone scoreless under Kerr once (4 times in his career), on November 14, 2023, when he was dismissed 1:43 into the game.
Another veteran under scrutiny is Chris Paul, who joined the Warriors this season and served as Stephen Curry’s backup point guard, averaging 9.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game.
“Chris has excelled both on the court and as a leader. He is one of our top players. I enjoy mentoring Chris (Paul). “I really hope we bring him back next year,” Kerr said.
