Jurgen Klopp made two changes to Liverpool’s league match against Sheffield United last week to face Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United team at Old Trafford in the Premier League.
After losing to them in the FA Cup, the Reds were most likely looking for vengeance when they visited Manchester United’s home ground. Ryan Gravenberch was replaced by Wataru Endo, who returned to the lineup after missing the Blades game due to a knock. Jarell Quansah replaced Joe Gomez on defence.
Jurgen Klopp’s side failed to capitalise on the number of chances they generated, as his final journey to Old Trafford as Liverpool manager ended in a 2-2 draw. Find the official match report here. The following are the match ratings for Liverpool players.
Caoimhin Kelleher (7/10)
Liverpool lost a goal due of a lack of positional awareness, despite being decent on the ball. However, Bruno Fernandes deserves credit for scoring where he did.
Conor Bradley 6/10
Got the best of Bruno in the first 20 minutes. Bradley gradually eased into the game, but there was nothing noteworthy about his play.
Jarell Quansah (6/10)
He appeared nervous from the beginning. Caught in possession several times. As it appeared that he had found his groove, he made a really bad pass to his captain, which was finally intercepted by the opposing captain and scored.
Virgil Van Dijk 7/10
They had excellent control of the game’s tempo. He couldn’t have done anything to prevent Liverpool from conceding either goal. He did an excellent job and commanded the backline as usual.
Andy Robertson 7/10Plays like he has a battery in his calves ™. Early on, he played a good number of crosses into the box and was always a threat due to his consistent presence. Liverpool’s opening goal came from a fantastic corner.
Wataru Endo (5/10)
Silently performing all of the dirty work in the game, yet ultimately doing nothing wrong and being simply respectable. Unfortunately for Endo, his contribution was insufficient to the game.
Alexis MacAllister 7/10
Good positioning throughout the first half. Held the midfield strings and was superb in both attacking and defensive transitions, but he was unable to maintain his goal-scoring streak.
Dominik Szogoszlai 7/10
On aim for the Reds’ opening chance of the game, but saved by Andre Onana. He constantly kept the goalie on his toes with his long shots and was also decent in midfield. Unfortunately, this did not result in a tangible sense of contribution to the scoreline. Made the most chances (4) in the game.
Luis Diaz (8/10)
Excellent goal from a set piece situation. Smart placement to find the back of the net after Darwin’s headed flick towards the back post. Amazing both on and off the ball. However, watching the second half became increasingly annoying.
Darwin Nunez 6/10
Culprit #2 in the game. Too many chances did not result in at least half as many goals because we were wasteful in front of the net. World-class off-the-ball game, but a little more clinical acumen would rocket him to even greater heights.
Mohamed Salah’s penalty earned him a 6/10 rating.
Was really wasteful in front of goal. Having said that, he moved well throughout the game and found himself in the half-spaces at the perfect times. Occasionally caught in possession near the end of the game.
Substitutions
Joe Gomez (6/10)Came in for Conor Bradley in the 66th minute. Did not make much of an impact on the game. Took a nice shot on goal, which may have gone in if not for Harry Maguire’s shinpads.
Ibrahima Konate is an unused substitute.
Curtis Jones (6/10)Came in for Szobo in the 66th minute. Was very good in positional sense and ball retention. As United attempted to threaten on the counter, they committed a smart tactical foul on Sofyan Amrabat. Given that this was only his second game back from injury, he did not make many mistakes.
Cody Gakpo (6/10)Came on for Darwin Nunez and displayed a lot of energy off the bench. He did not have a significant enough impact on the game to deserve a higher ranking.
Harvey Elliott (6/10)Elliott was great. With precise passes, I was able to find the attackers several times near the end of the game. Kept the ball in possession whenever necessary, and this cameo earns a spot in the next few games.
