When asked to remark on Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Sheffield United, Alexis Mac Allister quickly changed the subject.
The former Brighton & Hove Albion player praised teammate goalscorer Cody Gakpo’s hard ethic.
“Let me say something: I’m really happy for this guy, he’s been working very hard, and today he got his goal,” the Argentine told TNT Sports after the game (via @Ghonday18).
“I’m overjoyed because he’s one of these individuals who works extremely hard, is constantly upbeat, and is an excellent leader for the group.
“Very happy for him and for the team.”
This season, the Dutch international has scored 19 goals in 44 games, averaging one goal or assist every 124.63 minutes.
Is Cody Gakpo receiving the Darwin Nunez treatment?
The judgment of the former PSV star seems harsh.
We’re not implying that Gakpo is on Mo Salah’s or Darwin Nunez’s level of performance, but to argue that he’s been lacking in quality or relevance feels reactionary.
His excellent performance against Chris Wilder’s side illustrates how vital he has been as a substitute for Liverpool this season.
In reality, it was exactly the kind of contribution we needed in a game with potentially big implications for the title chase.
Credit to Mac Allister for warning fans not to underestimate the 24-year-old.
