If Manchester United makes the Champions League, it will be just as disappointing as the outcome of this fantastic game.

Mason Mount appeared to have committed the biggest theft of this or any other Premier League season by scoring late in stoppage time.

And Kristoffer Ajer’s late equaliser was far from fair.

Because United were thoroughly outplayed by a fantastic Brentford team that is still in danger of relegation.

It’s the time of year for miracles, and it’s unbelievable that Erik Ten Hag’s team averted defeat, which would have put another nail in the coffin of their prospects of placing among the top four or five.

Prior to Ajer’s goal, the Bees had hit the crossbar three times, forced outstanding saves from Andre Onana, had a goal disallowed for a tight offside, and squandered countless other opportunities.

Ten Hag says he is unfazed about allegations that he could be sacked as part of the changes planned by new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his management team.

The prospect of a significant payout obviously reduces the risk.

Any United supporter who is concerned about the club would want to know where it is going under the Dutchman. 

United started the game unchanged from the team that overcame Liverpool 4-3 in the thrilling FA Cup match, which was the high point of Ten Hag’s reign aside from the Carabao Cup success last season.

But the main question is how far United has come since their last visit to this region of West London.

Brentford showed clips from their astonishing victory in August 2022, when Thomas Frank’s team scored four goals in the first 35 minutes to win 4-0.

It’s hardly an exaggeration to say that with better finishing, the score would have stayed the same at halftime.

And it is fair to conclude that United has deteriorated this season after spending lavishly on Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana, and Mason Mount.

If victories over Champions League opponents Tottenham and Aston Villa earlier in the day hadn’t woken United up to the task at hand, the ear-splitting volume at which the Brentford PA system blasted Metallica’s Enter Sandman before kickoff should have.

Their squad, on the other hand, left them with little to be proud of, particularly after a poor first half performance.

Brentford had all of their best chances when captain Bruno Fernandes missed an early attempt, and they could have been two goals up before halftime.

Cross after cross, corner after corner landed in Andre Onana’s box. Shots and headers flew everywhere but the back of the net.

Toney, who had recently scored his first penalty for England against Belgium, missed the best of his opportunities.

Lively Yoane Wissa fired a first-time pass past Raphael Varane’s knees to his striking partner on the wrong side of Victor Lindelof. Toney’s shot, however, was slightly scuffed and hit Onana’s right-hand post before rebounding to safety.

The home side defended well, but United lacked penetration.

Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, in particular, struggled to leave an impact.

While Brentford had double-digit attempts, United’s first shot on goal came in the 42nd minute. Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken handled Rashford’s shot as easily as his team did against their opponents as a whole.

There was still time for Lindelof to make another last-ditch clearance and Onana to stop Lewis-Potter’s header.

At halftime, Harry Maguire replaced the injured Varane, and United played with renewed purpose. Flekken comfortably saved from Fernandes, but was relieved when Diogo Dalot’s attempt went just wide.

And, after Wissa failed to convert on a two-on-two break, Fernandes set up Hojlund, but Flekken made an incredible save.

Not to be outdone, Onana blocked Yehor Yarmoliuk’s shot and Lewis-Potter’s follow-up. However, the United goalkeeper was helpless when Wissa’s shot went wide.

Before the hour, Ten Hag had had enough and summoned Antony to Garnacho.

Little has changed, particularly Brentford’s inability to take risks. However, if Toney’s volley off Jensen’s ball had been successful, it would have been the season’s finest goal.

United’s defensive woes intensified when Lindelof became the club’s second center back to be sidelined due to injury. Lisandro Martinez, the World Cup winner, made his first Premier League appearance since February, and only his ninth of the season.

Before Frank made his first changes, Lewis-Potter tried an acrobatic shot over the bar.

Antony’s shot went just wide, but Brentford finally scored. Only for VAR to determine that Toney was offside when substitute Bryan Mbeumo crossed.

Then it was Mbeumo’s turn to be denied after striking the crossbar. Onana blocked Jensen’s header.

Toney failed to capitalize on Martinez’s blunder. It was just great.A minimum of nine minutes of stoppage time was determined. Mount, the unsung man, scored brilliantly in the sixth.

Brentford, on the other hand, escaped with the most undeserved defeat possible when Ajer converted Toney’s cutback in the ninth minute.

No one in those dreadful United shirts would have grumbled if they had won a couple more games..
