If this Manchester United club makes the Champions League, it will be as much of a disgrace as the outcome of this very incredible game.

Mason Mount appeared to have committed the biggest robbery of this or any other Premier League season, scoring late into stoppage time.

Kristoffer Ajer earned Brentford a point.

And Kristoffer Ajer’s late equaliser was hardly fair.

Because United were completely outplayed by a great Brentford side that is still in danger of relegation.

It’s the time of year for miracles, and it’s incredible that Erik Ten Hag’s team avoided defeat, which would have placed another nail in the coffin of their chances of finishing in the top four or five.

Before Ajer’s goal, the Bees had struck the crossbar three times, forced superb saves from Andre Onana, had a goal disallowed for a tight offside, and squandered numerous other chances.

Ten Hag maintains he is unconcerned about reports that he may be fired as part of the adjustments proposed by new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his management team.

The potential of a large payoff undoubtedly decreases the risk.

However, any United fan who is concerned about the club would ask where it is going under the Dutchman. 

United opened the game unaltered from the team that defeated Liverpool 4-3 in the exciting FA Cup contest, which was the highlight of Ten Hag’s reign aside from the Carabao Cup victory last season.

But the major question is how much United has evolved since their last visit to this part of West London.

Brentford played highlights from their stunning triumph in August 2022, when Thomas Frank’s side scored four goals in the first 35 minutes to win 4-0.

It is hardly an exaggeration to argue that with better finishing, the score would have remained the same at halftime.

And it is scarcely unjust to say that United have regressed this season after spending heavily on Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana, and Mason Mount.

If wins for Champions League rivals Tottenham and Aston Villa earlier in the day hadn’t woken United up to the task at hand, the ear-splitting level at which the Brentford PA system blasted Metallica’s Enter Sandman before kickoff should have.

United’s away fans also began the game in excellent spirits.

Their squad, however, provided them with little to brag about, particularly in a terrible first-half performance.

After captain Bruno Fernandes missed an early shot, Brentford created all of their better chances and could have been two goals ahead before halftime.

Cross after cross, corner after corner fell into Andre Onana’s box. Shots and headers flew everywhere but the back of the net.

Toney, who had just scored his first penalty for England against Belgium, squandered the best of his chances.

Lively Yoane Wissa sent a first-time pass through Raphael Varane’s knees, finding his strike partner on the wrong side of Victor Lindelof. Toney’s effort, however, was slightly scuffed and touched Onana’s right-hand post before rebounding to safety.

The home side defended effectively, but United lacked penetration.

Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, in particular, struggled to create an impression.

Back at the other end, Zanka hit the crossbar, and Toney shot high and wide.

While Brentford had double-digit shots, United’s first shot on target came in the 42nd minute. Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken dealt with Rashford’s shot as easily as his team did with their opponents as a whole.

There was still time for another last-ditch clearance by Lindelof and a Lewis-Potter header saved by Onana.

Harry Maguire replaced the injured Varane at halftime, and United played with more purpose. Flekken easily saved from Fernandes, but was relieved to see Diogo Dalot’s shot go just wide.

And, after Wissa failed to capitalize on a two-on-two break, Fernandes set up Hojlund, only for Flekken to make an outstanding stop.

Not to be outdone, Onana did an excellent job of blocking Yehor Yarmoliuk’s attempt and Lewis-Potter’s follow-up. However, the United goalkeeper was helpless when Wissa’s effort went wide.

Before the hour, Ten Hag had had enough and summoned Antony to Garnacho.

Little has changed, notably Brentford’s failure to take chances. However, if Toney’s volley from Jensen’s ball had been successful, it would have been a season-best goal.

United’s defensive difficulties worsened as Lindelof became the club’s second center back to be forced off due to injury. Lisandro Martinez, the World Cup winner, made his first Premier League appearance since February and only his ninth overall this season.

Before Frank made his first alterations, Lewis-Potter attempted an acrobatic shot over the bar.

Antony’s attempt went just wide, and Brentford eventually scored. Only for VAR to confirm that Toney was offside when substitute Bryan Mbeumo crossed.

Then it was Mbeumo’s turn to be denied after hitting the crossbar. Onana blocked Jensen’s header.

Toney failed to profit on Martinez’s error. It was really fantastic.A minimum of nine minutes of stoppage time was established. Mount, the forgotten man, scored beautifully in the sixth.

Brentford, however, escaped the most undeserved defeat possible when Ajer converted Toney’s cutback in the ninth minute.

If they had got a winner in a few more, no one in those terrible United shirts would have complained.
